A gameplay programmer specialises in implementing the core mechanics and systems that players directly interact with. While a generalist game programmer may work across engine systems or tools, the gameplay programmer focuses on player controls, enemy AI behaviour, game rules, scoring systems, physics interactions, and combat or movement systems. This role requires close collaboration with designers to translate design documents into responsive, polished game feel. In the Australian industry, gameplay programmers are highly valued because they directly influence the quality of the player experience. The role is one of the most creative in engineering, sitting at the intersection of design and technology.
What is a typical day as a Gameplay Programmer?
A gameplay programmer’s day is closely tied to the design team. They begin by reviewing the design backlog or meeting with a designer to discuss the next feature to be implemented. They then write and iterate on code in the game engine, frequently testing it themselves and with QA testers. The role requires constant playtesting to assess whether implemented mechanics feel correct. Gameplay programmers often write debug tools to visualise how systems are working under the surface, and they document their systems for the rest of the team.
Play through yesterday’s build to assess how the new dodge mechanic feels; take notes on timing and input responsiveness
Team standup — discuss the dodge implementation and agree on two specific feeling issues to address today
Open the player controller class in Rider; adjust the input buffer window for the dodge to be 80ms instead of 60ms and playtest again
