Filmmaking FAQ

Do I need to do a short course before I do the Advanced Diploma?

No, a short course isn’t required before going into the Advanced Diploma. We cover all the basics in the Advanced Diploma before getting stuck into industry skills. Our small class sizes mean we can accommodate students that are new to filmmaking as well as extend the learning for more experienced students.

If you are new to filmmaking a short course like Filmmaking for Beginners can be a great way to try out filmmaking hands-on and see if this is something you want to learn more about before embarking on the two-year Advanced Diploma.

Do I need a portfolio or experience to apply for the Advanced Diploma?

No, we’re looking for your creativity and commitment to learning about film! We’re always keen to see any work you have produced that relate to film and storytelling. Our trainers are working industry professionals and are keen to bring a range of learners together with a variety of backgrounds and experiences to make compelling content.

What will I make during the course?

You’ll work across 12 film projects, including short dramas, comedies, documentaries and more. If you’re passionate about a specific genre – sci fi, horror, period drama, action – you will get plenty of opportunities to tell your stories. Around 50 short films are produced by AIE film students each year!

Is AIE's Filmmaking course accredited?

Yes. AIE’s Certificate and Advanced Diploma programs are fully accredited and nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) which is regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

AIE is approved for VET Student Loans and is an ARRI Certified Film School — one of only a handful in Australia.

What can a Filmmaking qualification lead to?

Graduates go on to a wide range of career outcomes such as Production Coordinator and Director, working across traditional film and virtual production. See the full list here.
