With less than a year under their belt as a studio, the developers from Aberrant Realities have been creating a Virtual Reality (VR) experience to help inspire and engage Australia’s ice hockey fans.

Aberrant Realities is a team of made up of 7 AIE graduates from the 2016 game art, programming and design courses. After completing their studies, members of the team joined AIE’s Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) course to gain the skills to start their own game studio.

Through contacts at AIE they secured a contract with leading strategic marketing company Coordinate to develop a VR experience that could be set up at the CBR Brave Ice Hockey games and pop up events.

“It feels really good to see someone enjoy something you created, even if they’re a complete stranger, you see them react to certain things and you think to yourself “hey I did that part” or “I wasn’t expecting that kind of reaction, but ok!”. It really makes the whole experience worthwhile.” Chris Burden, AIE Alumni and Co-Founder of Aberrant Realities

Before forming a company, the team worked together on a game called ‘Double Shot’ for their major assessment in the second year of their two year AIE course. In the major assessment students from the different game disciplines (3D art, game design and programming) work together to develop a game in only 15 weeks.

“The major project in our second year of AIE was really a trial by fire for us. We took on this super ambitious idea of making a VR game, which was something we didn’t know much about at the time, and it worked out really well. It’s a really interesting platform to develop for, and I think our decision to make a VR game while we were still attending AIE, along with the support of our teachers and staff really helped us realise that this is exactly what we want to do, and we gained the skills to create things like this.” Chris Burden.

The team recently showed off Double Shot as one of over 16 student and alumni developed games that AIE included as part of it’s PAX AUS booth. Development of Double Shot is well underway with a release dates set for 2018. To keep up to date with Double Shot, head over to links below:
