Tony Oakden

Game Programmer

Tony became interested in computer programming and games as a hobby in the early 1980’s but that soon became an obsession and a career. His first game, Quest, was published in 1988 for the Acorn range of home computers and he has been involved in game development ever since. He has worked on developing games for many different platforms and budgets ranging from one-man indie titles for Android through to large AAA team-based projects. His best-known credits are, producer on the PC version of Bioshock (2007), producer for Fallout Tactics (2001), programmer on the PlayStation version of Driver 1(1999).

Tony stays abreast of modern trends and uses a variety of tools and middleware for his work including Unity and Unreal. He is interested in all aspects of virtual world and game development, but he is most interested in the procedural generation of large complex worlds and AI ecosystems and more recently deep learning algorithms and their application to computer games.

He currently teaches programming to first year degree students for the AIE Institute and is based in Canberra. Through teaching he hopes to pass his knowledge and enthusiasm onto the next generation of game developers so that they will get as much pleasure from the industry as he has.
