My Journey Into 3D Animation & VFX for Film – Rachael Stewart

Ever wonder what it’s like to have your name credited on a big blockbuster movie?

Rachael Stewart did too before she landed her dream job at major film post-production studios such as MPC and Method Studios.

Since graduating from AIE with an Advanced Diploma in Screen and Media, specialising in 3D Animation and VFX for Film in 2017, Rachael has worked on films such as Aquaman, Men in Black International and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

Rachael is an expert in digital matte painting, which is the process of painting a landscape, set or distant location in a movie scene to create the illusion of an environment that can serve as a background. We can see examples of this in many fantasy and superhero films.

Rachael moved from city to city to pursue her dream jobs and had only recently moved back to Australia to work at Mill Film, a subsidiary of industry giant Technicolor. She even mentioned meeting her fellow AIE students while she was working in Canada! “It’s always fun to see a fellow graduate”, she remarked.

We had the chance to speak with Rachael, who took time out of her busy schedule to chat with us about working in the VFX industry and how AIE kick-started her incredible journey!
