Internships
What is it?
For many graduates the need to overcome the gap between training and experience is not new. It’s the old “can’t get the job without the experience, can’t get the experience without the job” syndrome. And for employers there is always the risk of taking on someone new without the chance to assess them properly.
Communities and governments have traditionally addressed this challenge through a variety of traineeship and internship schemes. Unfortunately and for a variety of reasons success in the games area has been mixed yet this lack of appropriate work experience has been consistently identified by the games industry as one of the barriers to growth.
In response to this industry need the Academy of Interactive Entertainment has decided to offer its own graduate internship scheme in conjunction with key developers within the games and digital media industry.
How does it work?
Students graduate AIE as games programmers or 3D artists for games or film/digital media.
They have successfully completed one of the following qualifications:
- Diploma of Computer Game Development (Software Development)
- Diploma of Computer Game Development (Games Art)
- Diploma or Screen (3D Studio Max or Maya)
Interested game developers and digital content creators will be able to select graduates who have a suitable portfolio and the right skills for them.
A maximum of ten interns will be given the opportunity to gain sponsored employment for 3 months with an Australian game developer or digital media company and have their salary paid during this time by the developer and AIE. Intern’s salaries are capped at $30,000 pro rata per annum for 3 months and AIE’s contribution will be capped at $3750 plus GST for each intern.
How can my company be involved?
The first step is to register your interest and let us know what sort of intern you are looking for by filling out a registration form and sending via fax or email . Alternatively give us a call on 02-6162 5131 (Canberra Campus) or 03-9820 8201-(Melbourne Campus) to find out more. Completing this form does not commit your company to any action or guarantee your company an intern.
The next step is to match individual graduates with your requirements. AIE will make all potential intern’s portfolio and reels available on our website and recommend graduates who we think best fit your needs. AIE will arrange for a preliminary phone interview with selected graduates after which it is up to each individual company to organise face-to-face interviews and appropriate skills tests.
How can I apply to be an intern?
This service is available to graduating Diploma students at AIE Canberra and Melbourne. Students will be given internship application forms and demo reel submission deadlines as part of their courses.
