Overview

The Advanced Diploma of Professional Game Development is the most industry focused and relevant games course in Australia, developed in response to a shortfall in industry skill sets and driven by extensive consultation with Game Developers throughout Australia.

Guided by industry experienced teachers, the Advanced Diploma course is delivered through project modules covering all aspects of game creation currently employed in game development, as well as new technologies currently being developed by the industry. Students will focus on furthering their skills in all aspects of 3D Graphics, before focusing on individual specialisations in creating art assets for game development. All facets of 3D games modelling and animation are covered, including character, level design, environment modelling, game design, concept art, animation, and custom texturing.

The highlight of this course for most students is the game project in which Art and Programming students work together to develop a game from concept through to finished project. Working in a simulated industry environment, students work in teams to build a completed, playable game, allowing students to gain transferable industry-type experience whilst still studying.

Areas of Study

Game Development Industry
AIE students take part in a comprehensive series of industry presentations and networking events to promote strong understandings of industry roles and business areas. This builds on the industry simulated game project wherein students build a commercial quality game.

Modelling for Games Development
Students will specialise in low-polygon modelling and optimising artwork for original game characters, scenes and environments, giving students the skills to create professional art assets for their showreels.

Texturing
Students learn to create custom textures in Adobe Photoshop to enhance the aesthetic appeal and realistic appearance of low-polygon models.

Rigging and Animation
Students develop enhanced animation skills to create realistic movement in gameplay. This provides the skills and experience for students to develop industry standard animations such as game levels for their showreel.

Lighting and Vertex Shading
Introduces students to effective lighting techniques currently employed in the game industry.

Concept Art
Students will develop concept art and storyboard presentation skills, featuring both character and environment design. These skills are integral to the game development process, providing strong design conventions that shape commercial 3D production.

Workflow
Developing time management skills and working to game design documents, providing students with valuable skills in developing and meeting team expectations and deadlines.
