Q4. Do I need a UAI for AIE courses?
A4. NO! Entrance into AIE courses is generally based on portfolio and interview (for artists) or previous skills/programming knowledge and interview (for programmers). More information on entrance requirements for AIE courses can be found here.
Q5. Does AIE offer work experience for high school students?
A5. Generally, AIE cannot offer work experience in 3D Animation. AIE does occasionally take year 12 students who have an interest in teaching, administration or IT support for work experience.
Animation or game development is a very difficult area to gain work experience in, often because of the confidential nature of the projects being developed. Many students seek work experience in related areas, such as graphic design companies, as these tend to be accessible than game and film studios.
Q6. What times are classes run?
A6. Exact class times are published in January/February, prior to commencement of classes. Generally, full time classes are run either Monday & Tuesday 9am - 5pm and Wednesday 9am - 1pm OR Wednesday 1:30pm - 5:30pm and Thursday & Friday 9am - 5pm. Where possible, students will have a choice in which half of the week they study. Class timetables do change each year, please contact your campus of choice for more information.
Q7. Can I access AIE outside of my normal class times?
A7. Definitely! AIE is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and students are welcome to access labs during these times. Many resources are also available on our E-Learn website, allowing students to access course materials outside of hours.
Q8. What sort of computer do I need to run 3D Studio Max/MAYA?
A8. Recommended computer specifications for both Max and Maya change on release of new versions, so it is best to check with the manufacturer at www.discreet.com for more information.
Q9. Is there much homework in an AIE course?
A9. Assessment at AIE is usually assignment driven, so there is normally not a lot of homework for each course. Occasionally students may need to complete some research assignments or read chapters of certain texts outside of class times.
Students are encouraged to work on their own projects and demo reels outside of class times, especially during second year courses.
Q10. What should I include in my portfolio when applying for a Certificate IV course in animation?
A10. Any form of visual artwork is fine to include in your portfolio! What we are looking for is a demonstration of your creative abilities. Some common items we usually encounter in a students portfolio includes paintings, sculpture, sketches, anime drawings, animation (flash & 3D), digital artwork, website designs and many more. Please contact us if you are unsure on what to include in your portfolio.
Q11. Do I need to complete any short courses or Certificate II/III level courses before applying for a Certificate IV?
A11. No. Students can apply directly into a Certificate IV course, provided they meet the entry requirements for that particular course. Short courses and Certificate II or III courses can be good choices for students who aren't sure that a career in animation/games is for them. These courses are also good choices for students who are looking for an introduction into 3D to add to their existing portfolio.
